Arabic language instruction is offered through Tri-College cooperation. Arabic 001 and 002 are taught at Haverford College (ARAB H001 and ARAB H002 Introduction to Modern Standard Arabic). Intermediate Arabic courses are taught at Bryn Mawr (ARAB B003 and ARAB B004 Second-Year Modern Standard Arabic), and Advanced Arabic courses are available at Swarthmore College and the University of Pennsylvania through the Quaker Consortium.

The teaching of Arabic is one important component of the three colleges’ efforts to increase the presence of the Middle East in their curricula. Bryn Mawr offers courses on the Middle East in the departments of Anthropology, Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology, Comparative Literature, General Studies, History, History of Art, and Political Science. Additionally, students can have a concentration in Middle Eastern Studies.

ARAB H011  ADVANCED ARABIC (THIRD YEAR ARABIC)  (1.0 Credit)

This is an advanced Arabic language course designed for students who have completed two years of Modern Standard Arabic or the equivalent. This course deepens students’ understanding of Modern Standard Arabic by placing equal emphasis on advanced-level speaking, reading, writing, and listening skills. A more precise use of Arabic grammatical structures is cultivated and applied meaningfully in speech and writing. The course’s focus on reading comprehension skills furthers the student’s ability to scan advanced-level texts for general themes. Particular emphasis is placed on expanding vocabulary by utilizing it to discuss a wide range of topics in varied settings. Students will read and analyze a wide range of literary texts that reflect various social, economic, political, religious, and cultural realties in Arab societies. Finally, the course aims to enhance each student’s awareness of the diverse aspects of Arab life and culture through a variety of discussion activities. Pre-requisite(s): Second Year Arabic or its equivalent

The course aims to increase students’ expressive ability through the introduction of more advanced grammatical patterns and idiomatic expressions. Introduces students to authentic written texts and examples of Arabic expression through several media. Prerequisite: ARAB H002 or placement by instructor.

ARAB B100  INTRODUCTION TO JORDANIAN DIALECT AND CULTURE  (0.5 Credit)

Having studied Modern Standard Arabic in some depth before, this course will help you communicate in the Jordanian dialect while introducing you to an in-depth examination of the history and culture. This will take place through a variety of interactive exercises and real-life scenarios, possibly going shopping in one of the local stores, and/or similar field trips. In addition, the course will introduce and touch upon cultural norms of Jordan, some of it specific to the country and some shared by inhabitants of the Arab world. This course will helping you advance your understanding of the history and culture of Jordan, but also of the Arabic language and its usage on a daily basis.

ARAB B103  CONVERSATION ON CULTURE IN MSA MIXED WITH EGYPTIAN DIALECT  (1.0 Credit)

The main focus of this conversation course is the development of speaking and listening skills of students at the Advanced Level of Arabic. This will be achieved through the introduction of multimedia materials in Modern Standard Arabic. The materials selected will aim to help the students acquire socio-cultural competence while advancing their aural and oral communication skills. The selected audio-visual materials are meant to engage students, help them explore varied topics relating to the Middle East and its culture, and entice them to communicate their thoughts and express themselves in the language. Students will work individually and in pairs and groups to prepare skits and reports for oral presentations. This class is conducted entirely in Arabic. Prerequisite: Two years of Intensive Arabic or their evuivalnt.
